The men who would grow up to be Silicon Valley junior icons dreamed of running the world back when they were but put-upon high school nerds. Now they own the place and they're still clueless high school nerds. The jocks and pretty people started lots of wars, but at least they didn't giggle a ton when virtually raping the populace.
Mark Zuckerberg could blame a shit ton of his social errors on Asperger's. And he probably should. The Facebook CEO and awkward team leader ran a Virtual Reality demonstration where he put his and another female executive's avatars on a happy-go-lucky "safari" of hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico. See Mark and Rachel giddily try to high five in front of Puerto Rican emergency workers trying to restore power to the dying old people. This isn't one of those moments when you say it's okay to make a few jokes about Puerto Rico. For instance, how the mayor of San Juan looks like the re-stocker at Walmart who gets fired first after the holidays. This Facebook demo was in no way meant to be a joke. Rather a completely tone deaf choice of backdrops for a millennial VR presentation.
Zuckerberg thinks maybe people didn't get his plan. Though he understood it enough to mention Red Cross donations so he looks like less of a dick:
One of the most powerful features of VR is empathy. My goal here was to show how VR can raise awareness and help us see what's happening in different parts of the world. I also wanted to share the news of our partnership with the Red Cross to help with the recovery. Reading some of the comments, I realize this wasn't clear, and I'm sorry to anyone this offended.
Half the Silicon Valley execs aren't as intentionally sinister as they appear. A large part is attributable to psycho-social shortcomings. It's hard to remember eye contact makes them flop sweat when their net worth is in the 10-11-figures range.
The real problem is everybody is all fifty thousand other Facebook employees are too scared to say shit. It's like the denizens of Oz before the mighty wizard. Guys like Zuckerberg need handlers not on the spectrum with unchecked veto power over really bad ideas. Like the virtual reality pleasure cruise to flooded barrios of Puerto Rico.
